Most Common Subaru WRX & STI Engine Problems
1. Head Gasket Failure — The Most Infamous Subaru Problem
Subaru's EJ series engines are notorious for head gasket failures — particularly on naturally aspirated models, but also on turbocharged versions under hard use or with overheating history. The horizontally-opposed layout puts the head gaskets under unique stress. Symptoms include coolant loss without visible external leaks, white exhaust smoke, overheating, and milky oil (coolant mixing with oil). A blown head gasket caught early can be repaired with new gaskets and resurfaced heads. Left too long, it warps the heads and can crack the block — turning a $2,000 repair into a $6,000+ rebuild.
2. Piston Ringland Failure (EJ257 STI)
The EJ257 engine in the WRX STI has a known weakness: the ringland — the narrow section of the piston between the top two rings — can crack under high cylinder pressure, especially with aggressive driving, high boost, or improper tune. When a ringland fails, the piston breaks apart and destroys the engine rapidly. Symptoms include sudden loss of power, heavy smoke, and a horrible knocking sound. This is a full short block rebuild situation. Upgraded aftermarket pistons during the rebuild prevent recurrence.
3. Rod Bearing Wear
The EJ257 is also susceptible to premature rod bearing wear — especially in cars that have been tuned for more power without addressing the oiling system. High cylinder pressures combined with marginal factory bearing tolerances cause accelerated wear. A knocking sound that appears under load — especially when the engine is warm — is a serious warning sign. Rod bearing replacement, when caught early, is a relatively straightforward bottom-end job. Ignored, it destroys the crankshaft.
4. Turbocharger Failure & Oil Starvation
Subaru's OEM turbochargers are reliable when properly maintained, but oil starvation — caused by neglected oil changes, low oil level, or clogged oil feed lines — kills turbos quickly. Signs of turbo failure include blue smoke at startup or under boost, a whistling sound from the engine bay, and reduced power. We inspect the oil feed and return lines during every turbo replacement to address the root cause.
5. FA20DIT Timing Chain & Direct Injection Issues
The newer FA20DIT engine (2015+ WRX) eliminated the head gasket problem but introduced new issues. Timing chain stretch — causing rattling on startup — is an emerging concern on high-mileage examples. Additionally, direct injection engines accumulate carbon deposits on the intake valves (which port injection washes clean automatically). Regular intake valve cleaning is essential preventive maintenance on FA20 engines.
